Thomas Rippon purchased the scenic estate, settled as a hardscrabble farm carved out of the woods in 1754, when he was not yet 30, with the intent of enjoying the beautiful and unique countryside of Union County. Thomas immediately gave it the name “One Barn Farm” and developed a vision and executed a long-term plan to maintain the homestead as a colonial working farm, while enhancing the ambiance by establishing a wildlife preserve, additional woodlands, a wetlands habitat, and plantings to help the flora and fauna of Pennsylvania thrive. Thomas has planted over 11,000 trees on the farm during his stewardship and created 2 miles of walking trails. Mr. Rippon is a Certified Pennsylvania Master Naturalist and a multi-line entrepreneur.
The elegant stone farmhouse was described in a local history published in 1855 as a "mansion." Thomas had lived in Europe as an exchange student and again during his US Army service, and he became aware of “manors” and “manor houses," so he also worked on adding natural design features and extensive landscaping to turn the property into a veritable “country estate.” The dignity of the generous stone home complements the dignity of the large timber frame barn, and the venue can now be described as “Rippon Manor at One Barn Farm.” The nicest barns in the world are in Ukraine and central Pennsylvania, and the barn at One Barn Farm is an award-winning example of such exquisite beauty—by acclamation, a superb place for “a barn wedding.”
